The Institute of Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB) at Universität Karlsruhe (TH) was founded in 1971 and is part of the School of Economics and Business Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe.
The knowledge management research group of the Institute AIFB is one of the leading institutions in Semantic Web technology. Approximately 20 researchers are establishing theoretical results and scalable implementations for the field. Particular emphasis is given to areas such as ontology creation and manipulation, intelligent web agents, intelligent semantics-based applications, semantic web services, ontology learning, semantic web mining, logical foundations and the implementation of interfaces and tools. The group is also part of the interdisciplinary Karlsruhe Service Research Institute (KSRI).
The group is participating in several EU-funded projects, including the integrated projects ACTIVE, SOA4ALL, NEON, and X-Media as well as various national projects.
