Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena was founded in 1558 as the State University of Thuringia, a role it serves until today. In 2006 FSU had an enrolment of more than 20.000 students in a wide area of subjects like medicine, biology, law, economics, mathematics, computer science and informatics, etc.

The Department of Computer Science and Informatics(CIS) was newly established in 1993 on the basis of existing competencies and professorships. The Department is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics.

CIS currently has a staff of 16 full and associated professors. About 700 students are directly affiliated with the department in different programs including computer and information science, bioinformatics, and other specialized curricula. CIS was awarded the status of official research partner with Siemens and IBM.

There are intensive contacts to local companies, mostly SMEs, in the areas of general information technology, eCommerce, high-tech production in optoelectronics, and biotechnology. As a result of the close cooperation between research and industry, a remarkable number of spin offs was released, especially also in the IT and biotechnology domains (Jena managed to rank consistently in the top three regions in Germany).

At CIS the Competence Center “Self-Organized Integration of Computing and Information Systems” (SOVIS) was established in 2006. It is the goal of the centre to efficiently integrate the expertise present at CIS into a unified approach. The competence centre therefore aims to combine knowledge from a multitude of fields of activity within computer science, like semantic web technology, distributed grid computing, autonomic computing, peer-to-peer applications or mobile platform integration. The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics is also responsible for the center of excellence in the area of “Analysis and Management of Complex Structures and Systems” which integrates all the (complex) systems related research activities at FSU, e.g. with partners in physics, chemistry, material sciences, etc.
