Semantic Technologies and Ontologies Technical Group

Mission

The mission of this working group is to provide a forum for collaboration amongst projects, primarily within the Software and Service Architectures unit, on the application of semantics to SOA. In particular the working group will focus on:

Generic ontologies for describing services. Current initiatives in this area include the Web Services Modelling Ontology (WSMO).

Generic ontologies for describing Grid entities. A Grid Resource Ontology was recently developed while there are ongoing efforts for the development of SLA, QoS and Security related ontologies.

Architectures and infrastructures for managing semantic SOA systems and applications. An example of this includes the Semantic Execution Environment currently being standardised within OASIS.

Architecture and methodologies for the development of Semantic Grid infrastructures such as the S-OGSA reference architecture.

Semantic languages and representation formalisms for representing services.

Use cases that demonstrate the business value delivered from the adoption of semantics in a SOA environment.

The Working Group will establish and maintain links with the Conceptual Models for Services Working Group which captures the work from previous, the NESSI Semantics Working Group and ongoing projects on Semantics applied to SOA.

Upcoming Events

Next formal meeting will be held at the Internet of Services FP6 and FP7 project collaboration meeting in Brussels from June 10-11, 2009.

The European Commission, DG Information Society, "Software & Service Architectures and Infrastructures" Unit organises together with the projects IRMOS, SLA@SOI and SOA4ALL the Internet of Services Concentration meeting.

All representatives of FP6 and FP7 projects in the area of Software & Services, Grid and Software and Service Architectures and Infrastructures are invited to participate. Also welcome are representatives from other projects who wish to collaborate with the above projects or wish to contribute to the Future Internet Assembly.

Previous Events

Visit the STI International Education website for a review of the first Semantic Web Services Winter Retreat which took place in Seefeld, Austria from March 1-7, 2009. The Retreat was co-organized by European ICT research projects COIN, SOA4All, and Service Web 3.0.

STI International & Service Web 3.0 organized a semantics related session at the ICT Event in Lyon on the 25th of November. Software-as-a-Service: On the Future of Semantics in SOA. Visit the Service Web 3.0 site for a post-report and collection of presentations.
