1st Workshop on Service Web Engineering (SWEng)

In the last years, a thriving research vision has emerged of the Service Web, driven by the continuing trend towards service-oriented architectures (SOA), cloud computing and Web 2.0 APIs, in which Web sites provide programmatic access to their content and functionality. We envision a future Web in which billions of services will be seamlessly found, composed and executed just as how in today’s Web we can find and browse billions of documents, enabled by the use of semantic technologies for describing richly the functional and non-functional characteristics of services and enabling systems to automate the requisite mediation and agreement between services.

To achieve such a vision, current software engineering practices need to adapt to the brave new world of Web-based services. Current content and functionality providers need to consider the specific requirements of future service provision on the Web, including how to address new challenges such as the semantic description of services, means for service mediation and negotiation, as well as models and conditions for composition with other services. Every Web user will also be enabled to create and offer services on this Service Web, making lightweight yet robust approaches compulsory.

The goal of this workshop will be to continue a dialogue among researchers, software engineers and future service providers on the challenges and solutions to future service engineering on the Service Web.

Following on from a published roadmap for Services in Industry[1], this workshop will continue the efforts of STI International to explore the needs and research challenges faced when preparing for the future Web of Services, and workshop results will also feed into a report that will be presented to the Future Internet activity on Services and Architectures (services.future-internet.eu).

Workshop format

The workshop will be split into two parts: presentations of accepted papers and a panel-led discussion on how to engineer the Service Web.

Relevant topics

Papers are solicited  containing research results and ongoing work addressing the needs of engineering the Web of Services:

·        Service description models, including description of RESTful services and Linked Data endpoints

·        Semantics for automated service location and execution

·        Mediation between services

·        Negotiation with services

·        Composition of services, including lightweight and mash-up oriented ad hoc compositions

·        Expressing rules and conditions for service use

·        Service development methodologies

·        Service testing

·        Service evaluation

·        Scalability of service technologies on the Web

Submissions

Workshop papers should be formatted according to Springer’s LNCS formatting
guidelines (see instructions for the main conference) and not exceed 12 pages.

The workshop submission system will be made available shortly on Easychair.

The official LNCS post-proceedings for all workshops accepted at ICWE 2010 will be published by Springer. Please note authors of accepted workshop papers will be asked to prepare a revised version of their paper taking the discussions at the workshop into account.
