Standardisation
Service Manager: Jeff Pan
For two systems to communicate meaningfully they must have a shared basis consisting of protocols, syntax, semantics, and meaning (e.g., real-world references). Indeed, standards enable meaningful communications among different systems across different parts of the world and could facilitate wider adoption of semantic technologies. STI2 will actively develop and promote standards and guidelines for exchanging, processing, understanding, and using information, by active participation in the work of established standardization bodies, such as W3C and OASIS, through member submissions. STI2 will contribute to the transfer of Semantic Technologies into these standardisation bodies by collaborating across the network of academic and industrial partners and relevant end users.
STI2 will leverage the experience of STI2 partner organisations that have contributed and are contributing to standards efforts (e.g. SEE technical committee in OASIS, OWL, RIF, and SAWSDL working groups in W3C) to educate other STI2 partners. STI2 will facilitate the following standardisation services:
- Disseminate research results and technology transfer outside of STI2 through standards activities,
- Knowledge transfer from STI2 members involved in standards to those who are not yet involved,
- Participation in standards working groups and technical committees.
