Competitions bring out the best in people. If competitions are held in the open, meaning that the rules force the participants to open their methods to other competitors, the opponents learn quickly and the joint net result increases. This effect can be seen in the various TREC information-retrieval competitions. The network will actively support and initiate challenges on key issues in the Semantic Web area, such as with respect to semantic annotation and search for text retrieval and multimedia retrieval, semantic integration of web services, and alignment of real-life ontologies.
