Semantic Management of Business Processes in the Future Internet , tutorial at FIS 2008

Presenters:
Agata Filipowska I Department of Information Systems, Poznan University of Economics, PL Marin Dimitrov I Ontotext Lab., Sirma Group Corp., Sofia, BG Dumitru Roman I STI Innsbruck, AT
The proposed tutorial is to explain and demonstrate how the combination of technologies from the area of Business Process Management (BPM) and Semantic Web Services (SWS) can contribute to the vision of Internet of Services and multi-partners processes. The tutorial will present the state of the art in the areas of BPM and SWS motivating the need for explicit use of semantics to overcome the Future Internet challenges. Next, a consolidated technical framework that integrates SWS and BPM technology will be demonstrated. The tutorial will be held by the BPM and SWS experts that actively work on integration of both technologies in the EU-funded SUPER project. After having presented pure SWS tutorials as well as tutorials on the integration of SWS into BPM at previous conferences, we now propose the tutorial showing semantic management of processes between enterprises contributing to the vision of Internet of Services. We therewith follow the trend in the research community to focus on the applicability and integration of semantic technologies in the real-world, next to foundational research on ontologies and Semantic Web Services.

Triple Space Computing: Large-Scale Integrated Knowledge Applications, tutorial at FIS 2008

Presenters:
Reto Krummenacher I STI Innsbruck, University of Innsbruck, AT Jacek Kopecky I STI Innsbruck, University of Innsbruck, AT David de Francisco I TID, ES
In the tutorial, we introduce a newly emerging technology called "Triple Space", a system which applies the paradigm of space-based computing to realize a coordination middlewaremanaging information formalized using Semantic Web representation languages and coordinating the exchange of machine-readable information among many distributed entities on the Web. Triple Space Computing is a future solution for high scale knowledge distribution and coordination scenarios. We present the concept and the existing implementation, guided by a concrete demonstration based on a Digital Asset Marketplace for a large telecommunications company. Attendees will download and use a Triple Space kernel and learn how to use it as communication and coordination middleware for their Semantic Web applications. The need for novel Web service coordination middleware compliant with fundamental architectural principles of the Web -- such as persistent publication and asynchrony -- is identified as essential in the Future Internet. Such middleware will cope with an Internet in which automated, intelligent services will outnumber human users, performing many tasks based on the generation and consumption of knowledge available on the Semantic Web. Without such middleware, the scalability and coordination needs of the Future Internet will not be satisfiable. The goal of this tutorial is to introduce the Triple Space Computing paradigm and to showcase its use forthe development of applications for the Future Internet. The tutorial will provide insights into both theoretical as well as practical aspects of this new paradigm, and aims at familiarizing
developers and researchers with the available software and theories that were mostly established in course of the European research project TripCom. Participants will be granted full access to an instance of the Triple Space and learn how to use it for the integration and coordination of their distributed, heterogeneous and large scale (Semantic) Web applications.

Future Plans: Tutorials

Semantic Web Services and their role within Enterprise Processes and a Service Web, tutorial at ESWC 2009

This tutorial has been accepted for the European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) in June 2009.
Presenters: John Domingue, Jacek Kopecky, Carlos Pedrinaci, Elena Simperl and Agata Filipowska
Structure:
Part I: Introduction to SWS
Part II: SWS within the Enterprise
Part III: SWS and the Service Web
Part IV: Hands-on session
Summary:
Service-Oriented Computing is commonly lauded as a silver bullet for Enterprise Application Integration, inter-organizational business processes implementation, and even as a general solution for all complex applications. Still, the level of automation provided by traditional technologies is limiting the benefits that can be achieved. Semantic Web Services extend Web Services with semantic annotations in order to circumvent these limitations, better supporting the automation of service discovery, composition, mediation and execution. In this tutorial we present an introduction to Semantic Web Services technologies covering a wide range of topics ranging from formalisms, to their interpretation and use within concrete scenarios. We briefly introduce current Web Services technologies and standards. We present WSMO, a highly expressive formalism for describing Semantic Web Services. We describe a reference architecture for Semantic Execution Environments able to process WSMO descriptions in order to automate the discovery, composition and mediation of Web Services and how this can support furtherautomation within the life-cycle of Business Process Management systems. We additionally introduce a lighter set of formalisms, namely WSMO-Lite and MicroWSMO, aimed at supporting ascalable application of Semantic Web Services technologies over the Web. Finally, we help attendants to get better acquainted with the notions exposed through a hands-on session using state of the art technologies.
