Semantic Technology Institute International

The mission of STI International - Semantic Technology Institute International - is to exploit Semantics to overcome economic, societal and technological challenges and the limitations of current communication and collaboration technologies through the provision of scientific foundations, technological frameworks, and industrial-strength applications enabling Semantics to become an integral component of modern-day Information Systems.STI is supported by scientific, industrial and governmental parties of the world wide Semantic Web and Service community. STI is an initiative of the European Semantic Systems Initiative (ESSI), the European FP6 Project Knowledge Web and DERI International. STI will set up its own research infrastructure and will implement public and internal services that support the individual partner organizations in their research collaboration, standardization, dissemination and exploitation activities.

STI was founded in April 2007 and is established as a research association within Austria.

STI Innsbruck, University of Innsbruck

The Semantic Technology Institute Innsbruck (STI Innsbruck, formerly known as DERI Innsbruck, Digital Enterprise Research Institute) at the University of Innsbruck is one of the leading research institutions in the area of Semantic Web, Semantic Web services and Service Oriented Architecture technology worldwide.Besides the core research areas, STI Innsbruck also has a large body of expertise in the fields of semantic space middleware solutions, context modelling and ubiquitous services. Started as a research group under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Dieter Fensel in 2003, it has officially become a research institute at the University of Innsbruck as of January 2006. STI Innsbruck has three full- and part-time professors, Prof. Dr. Dieter Fensel (Institute Director), Prof. Dr. Martin Hepp, and Prof. Dr. Thomas Strang. STI Innsbruck maintains broad international collaboration with many countries outside of Europe, such as the United States, Japan, and South Korea. The institute also aims at maintaining a lively knowledge exchange with local industry. In this respect, STI Innsbruck has installed a Business Development unit that provides guidance and training to business professionals with the clear goal to showcase the potential benefits of applying semantic technology in industry.
