Web Services

Objectives ad Scope

Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) are widely acknowledged within industrial and academic communities for their potential to revolutionize the world of computing as a) SOA provides an abstraction layer over software and b) SOA enables businesses to be transformed from monolithic black-boxes to a set of value-adding micro-functionalities available to anyone with an Internet connection. However, SOA suffers from a scalability problem because all the activities associated with developing or maintaining SOA based applications have to be carried out by human developers. The Semantic Web Service roadmap will cover all semantic technologies which can support the mechanization of application development from online functionalities including those available as (standard) Web services, REST services and mashups. Moreover, we are open to any technology which enables functionality to be made available on the Internet (current or emerging). The main tasks associated with SOA based application development that we will target are: service discovery, negotiation, adaptation, composition, invocation, and monitoring as well as service interaction requiring data, protocol, and process mediation. The roadmap will cover issues related to ontologies and formal languages for characterizing online services and also aspects related to execution and brokering systems.

Context

This work is in the context of previous, ongoing and new EU projects which are listed below. Also we have the work carried out by the ESSI WSMO working groups.

Approach

The intellectual content of the roadmap will be generated in a number of ways:

  • EU projects – a number of STI members are involved in ongoing and new EU projects which will carry out research in SWS.
  • SWS related pre-standardization and standardization work – there are a number of ongoing activities within and outside of STI which are concerned with standardization. The content of these activities will feed into the roadmap.
  • SWS workshops – targeted workshops will stimulate the generation and acquisition and collection of SWS knowledge.
  • General SWS literature – elements of the roadmap will be derived from the SWS literature.

Outcome

The outcome will be a roadmap for the application of Semantics to functionalities available online on the Web.
