Social Networks

Objectives and Scope

Social networks such as Friendster, Facebook, Myspace, Orkut and others are among the leading Web applications today. Used both for business networking with partners and colleagues as well as private networking with friends. They have become a fundamental part of conducting business today. The aims of this service are threefold.

  • We will provide and operate a specialized social network for the STI2 community, where members of STI2 can connect and share information.
  • We will provide a skeleton for Semantics-based social network systems, where semantics is used to provide reacher means of expression in social networks, e.g. provide several relationships within the social webs or several categories of groups.
  • We provide the structure and content of the STI2 social network in anonymized form to interested researchers for social network analysis.

Context

Semantics can provide various benefits for social networks. For example, ontologies can be used as an extensible data model for profile information of social network participants and can provide reach means to type social relations in the network, e.g. to distinguish friendship relationships from colleague relationships, business relationships etc.

Approach

According to the strategy adopted for the roadmapping service, the goal of the activity is to identify the final list of challenges and to derive a timeline for development.

Outcome

The outcome will be a roadmap for Social Networks.

Roadmapping: Associated Project

The roadmapping exercise will be carried out in cooperation with ????.

  • Nepomuk nepomuk.semanticdesktop.org

Roadmapping: who

The following people will be invited to participate in the roadmapping exercise and workshops. We expect about 50% "yes" from researchers in the Semantic Web area and 10% "yes" from researchers in social networks

Researchers in Conjunction with Semantic Web

  • Tom Gruber (Keynote Speaker ISWC 2006)
  • Peter Mika (Yahoo Researcher)
  • Tassilo Pellegrini (Co-Author of Springer Book Social Semantic Web)
  • Andreas Blumauer (Co-Author of Springer Book Social Semantic Web)
  • Raphael Volz (Service Area Chair)
  • Sören Auer (University of Leipzig)
  • Max Völkel (FZI Karlsruhe)
  • Markus Krötzsch (University of Karlsruhe)
  • John Breslin (DERI Galway)
  • Jennifer Golbeck (University of Maryland)

Researchers on Social Networks

We will approach renowned researchers that focus on social networks and ask for their participation. We try to bring together all perspective from various disciplines such as sociology, economics, computer science and mathematics.

  • Steve Borgatti, Gatton College of Business, University of Kentucky
  • Howard E. Aldrich, Kenan Professor, Sociology,University of North Carolina
  • Vladimir Batagelj, Professor of Discrete and Computational Mathematics, University of Lublijana
  • Ulrik Brandes, Professor, Department of Computer & Information Science, University of Konstanz
  • Kathleen M. Carley, Professor, School of Computer Science, Institute for Software Research International, Carnegie Mellon University

  • Jonathon N. Cummings, Assistant Professor of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

  • Arent Greve, Professor of Organization Theory, The Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration
  • Andrej Mrvar, Assistant Professor of Social Science Informatics, University of Ljubljana

Roadmappping Workshop: when

The expected period for the organisation of the roadmapping workshop is Spring 2008.

We will try to motivate people to participate by providing an unique experience and conducting the roadmapping workshops in a 3D world (most likely Second Life).
