Ontologies are key enablers of semantic technologies. Engineering ontologies at industrial strength requires on the one hand robust methods for the efficient and effective generation of ontological content, and for the evaluation of the produced artefacts. On the other hand real-world ontology-driven systems can be feasibly developed only if the business implications of semantic technologies are taken into account. With this respect more research remains to be carried on in the field of cost estimation, planning and controlling, and quality assurance. STI2 will emphasize the importance of ontologies as part of business value chains for suppliers and customers of semantic technologies and will enable the ontology engineering discipline to step to a new level of maturity, which is essential for the adoption of ontologies in business contexts.
