Our Vision

In terms of (i) research and development, our goal for the next 5 years is to build up a significant research capacity in key application-oriented areas for semantic technology uptake; expanding and focusing our research project portfolio and pursuing development work which will produce practical demonstrations of semantic technology which can be commercialized, including the provision of services to other organizations in the application value chain. We plan to focus in the areas of Mobile, Media, Internet of Things and Linked Data, as we expect key opportunities for semantic R&D and commercialization to emerge here in the next years.

As (ii) a mediator for the semantics community, STI International was founded in 2007 to establish semantics as a pillar of modern computing. As an association of nearly 50 organisations, it represents a wide spread of research centres and industry in the area of Semantic Web, who have established and are establishing important standards and technologies for semantic data production and consumption. It lies in their interests to see semantics achieve mainstream and widespread adoption. STI Research and Consultancy will build up specialized knowledge and a unique overview of sectors and opportunities, to be the key advisor to research and industry for the potential and uptake of semantic technology as a solution to both business problems and enabler of new innovation and business opportunities.

STI as an organization and as a community has a joint vested interest to seeing prior effort and investment come to fruition. As a private organization, STI Research and Consultancy will pursue this vision with a co-ordinated research and development effort towards practically demonstrating the potential and added value of semantics for key emerging areas, both through its own activities and by consultancy offers to the community to support their future activities. As an organization with a responsibility to its association members, STI Research and Consultancy will also play an important mediator role between the community represented by the STI Association and the wider world – key industry sectors, stakeholders such as the European Commission, and larger initiatives such as Future Internet – both to bring semantics to its full potential and ensure the STI communities’ leading role in that achievement.
