Personalised TV Guide and adaptive ads

This use case was led by Dutch interactive television developer Stoneroos, and focused on personalised EPG services and advertising, adapted to context (such as time and location) and the control interface of different devices.

Showcase goals

  • Design and implementation of multilingual personalised programme guide (PPG) across multiple devices (Web, iPhone, connected TV and set-top box)
  • Personal ad placement based on user profiling and state of the art metadata classification
  • To develop a clear advertisement model for personalised ads
  • Support for multiple languages (including Turkish, Korean and Dutch) including translation of EPG metadata
  • Providing users with multiple modes of interfacing with a system. For example, combining a visual modality (e.g display and keyboard) with voice modality (e.g. speech for input)

These objectives were part of the overall NoTube project goals.

Who was involved? The lead partner for this Use Case was Stoneroos working in collaboration with Korea Telecom, Engin Medya Hizmetleri in Turkey, Thomson Video Networks, and other project partners in the consortium.

A short introduction to iFanzy
In the following video we show a short introduction to iFanzy and the different platforms on which it is running. Within the NoTube project we hope to be able to enlarge it further and introduce many new innovative features.

IBC 2010
In September 2010 iFanzy was demonstrated within the NoTube booth on the International Broadcasting Convention. A lot of people showed interest in the project and could enjoy some glimpses of the future of digital television.

In 2009 iFanzy was selected to be showcased in the poster session of the EuroITV conference. In this poster we show the different sources which are parsed by the server at the top, and the different target client applications which request data from this server at the bottom. Each client is specifically tailored to facilitate the user with exactly that data mostly expected from that user on such a device. The poster is shown in the following figure:

Also on the last incarnation of the EuroITV conference in Lisbon, Stoneroos was selected to present a NoTube poster. This time we targeted it at our work in WP7b, namely the generation of personalized advertisement. The poster shows the user’s input at the top, leading to the generation of personalized ads at the bottom. We deliberately chose for a conspicuous design which led to a huge interest from the crowd!

Next to our movie and poster, a Turkish brochure was made to advertise the iFanzy on the iPhone in Turkey. In the following PDF pages you can see the Turkish and English brochure.

Advertisement insertion technology from Thomson Video Networks

To insert an advertisement in an MPEG stream, the ad insertion technology of TVN based on ROI (Region Of Interest) is used. This technology tries to discover the best time and location to insert an ad such that it is still visible but not completely spoiling the user’s experience. At the best time, identified by the algorithm, an advertisement will be inserted in his content (picture in picture) without interruption of his content.

Multilingual and multimodal content access technology from KT

“Alleh tv now!” is an application for mobile smart devices in Korea which lets users watch TV & VOD. Developed by kt (korea telecom), it has 30 live channels and 5000 movies. Currently, it is only accessible in the Korean language and since most customers of kt’s IPTV service are Korean, there has been no need of a multilingual support. However there is an increased demand of accessing this service in other languages such as English. For example, a person who immigrates into Korea might have a difficulty of searching for VODs in Korean and prefer to use English which is more familiar language to him/her. To this end, kt has incorporated a translation service that helps finding “Alleh TV now!” contents using English into the application. It addition, both text-based and speech-based searches are supported.
