STI International prides itself on our membership of researchers, educators, developers, innovators, and entrepreneurs working for institutions and organizations with a vested interest in the field of semantic technologies. Our strong reputation stems directly from the high profile members of our executive and advisory boards, most of whom hold prestigious positions at commendable institutions. But at the heart of it, we are a networking organization; our daily operations and activities focus on providing a functional coordination and communication framework for the broad semantic technology community, driving the knowledge transfer from academia to industry through the research, technology, and realization cycle provisioned by the STI International Service Coordinators. In order to communicate our activities and the advancements being made by STI International and its membership in delivering and disseminating semantic technologies for the Future Internet, we have decided to launch this regular newsletter

Future Internet - a term which at times comes across as a contrived prediction with earnest intentions - can be currently understood as an open challenge. It’s an idea, a vision, a collection of optimistic objectives and proposed solutions, requiring global, cross-domain, collaborative effort. It’s the coined name of the international initiative led by the European Commission to preempt the coming challenges as our modern society becomes more dependent upon and immersed with networked technologies. The visionaries behind the Future Internet foresee scenarios which demand innovative solutions beyond the capacity of our current Internet; of course this is not to imply the status quo is satisfactory.

The Service Web 3.0 project began in January of 2008 focusing on the realization of a Service Web: a Web of billions of services relying on advanced infrastructure for properly supporting the integration of data and processes via semantic technologies; ultimately, a constellation of service ecosystems spanning between businesses, third-party organizations, and end users.

By the first eve of the 2nd STI International Offsite, attendees were already congratulating the organizers on how they'd out done themselves compared to the year prior. The quaint island town of Kalamaki - more or less an intersection, a couple simple hotels, a string of cafes and restaurants on the beach, and of course the quintessential disco - provided a unique setting where attendees were encouraged to engage in informal discussion about common research challenges and recent accomplishments, finally match faces to names they'd been citing or even collaborating with over the past year, and perhaps meet some of the prominent invited speakers and participants; STI International has without a doubt found a new home for our annual meeting.

The Semantic Technology (SemTech) Conference based in California attracts more attendees than any other event specializing in our field. The conference addresses real-world issues faced by the industry today, and the companies and organizations which are providing solutions based upon semantic technologies. This year STI International sponsored the event and held the first “SemTech European Day 2009.” The one-day session focused upon successful European research and promising start-ups in the area of semantic technologies. Prominent research projects, initiatives, and companies from the STI International network presented their newest findings in the morning sessions; the afternoon sessions continued with a panel entitled "From European Research to Successful Start-ups," followed by further demos and presentations from European projects such as NeOn, Active, SOA4All, SUPER, and NoTube. The invited panelists: Pieter De Leenheer, Co-founder of Collibra; Atanas Kiryakov, CEO of Ontotext AD; Tony Lee, President and CEO of Saltlux; and Sinuhe Arroyo from Semsphere, analyzed the pros and cons of such a model, primarily focusing on completing the bridge from mature research results to industrial products.
Check back if you’re interested in further collaboration efforts between STI International and Semantic Universe, the American-based organization behind the Semantic Technology Conference.
Thanks to those who made it happen!

March began with the gathering of a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, and experts in the Semantic Web Services (SWS) domain for the first SWS Winter Retreat held in Seefeld, Austria. Trapped up in the mountains of Tirol, the participants were able to interact on a one-to-one level with established researchers in order to gain deeper insights and clarity in current state-of-the-art Semantic Web Service technologies. The program combined theoretical lectures, tutorials, hands-on sessions, and teamwork exercises to maximize the knowledge gained by the varied participants. Informal supplements included evening social activities and an afternoon on the ski slope. The week was organized by STI International and STI Innsbruck, and co-sponsored by several national and international research projects that support training and educational activities in the area of semantic technologies and Web services. Representatives from the COIN project filmed the tutors and invited speakers for the online platform VideoLectures.
