History
The Business Information Systems conference was established in 1997. It started as a small mostly Polish-German conference with the aim of fostering the collaboration between researchers from Eastern and Western Europe in the area of information systems. Poznań was just in the middle between Berlin and Warsaw. For several years the conference had been co-located with INFOSYSTEM, the biggest and the most influential in their time fairs devoted to information and communication technologies in Central and Eastern Europe.
Although originally mostly Polish, it has already been held in several locations, including University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, University of Klagenfurt and University of Innsbruck in Austria, where STI International assisted in the local organization and coordination processes of the conference at the venue. Additionally, STI International is a sponsor of BIS. The plans are to organize BIS 2010 abroad, and several locations are now considered.
Since the inception the conference focused on development and implementation of information systems supporting the organizations. The themes changed as changed ideas and models for managing modern enterprises. BIS has always presented what later became a standard.
Since the establishment the conference steadily improved its rank. The first major milestone was in 1999 when proceedings were published as a book by Springer Verlag. Best papers of BIS 2000 were published in a book edited by Witold Abramowicz (PUE) and Jozef Zurada (University of Louisville) published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. In 2003 the conference for the first time took place outside of Poznań. Proceedings of BIS 2007 were published as a volume in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS), and since 2008 proceedings are published in a new and more relevant series Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing (LNBIP). In 2008, Wirtschaftsinformatik (WI), the most respected European journal of information systems, classified BIS among the relevant IS conferences giving it the rank B. In 2009 the acceptance rate has fallen below 30% what was a requirement to be ranked as A conference by WI.C
