Description

STI International Off-Site Review

The STI Off-Site 2008 was organized as a 2-day event aligned with the 5th European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC2008) in Tenerife, Spain. The main aim of the event was to support networking and interaction amongst the Ph.D. students and researchers of the STI members, thereby facilitating collaborative research in the area of Semantic Technologies.

The event was a great success with highlights including:

An elevator pitch – participants were placed into groups of four and asked to produce a 2-minute video- based elevator pitch for STI International. Primarily this video had to address the question:

“What are the benefits of STI International and why should you become a member?”

The results were judged by a Jury consisting of: Dieter Fensel, John Domingue, Mark Greaves and Raphael Volz: judging along criteria including: answering the posed question, convincibility, product placement, audience response, aesthetics and cinematography. The results were very impressive – especially given that the videos were created in less than a day. See the link for the videos below.

In terms of awards – the joint-winners were the group with the presentation title “Breaking news: De-conspiracy of worldwide STI network.” (Alessio Gugliotta, Michael Hackl, Maria Maleshkova, Michal Zaremba) and the presentation entitled “How STI will gain world power” (group of Denny Vrandecic). Congratulations to both winning teams.

Within the scope of the Off-Site the STI Service Coordinator of the Year 2008 award – for her sterling work in the educational area – went to Elena Simperl. Christian Bizer received the STI Ph.D. of the Year 2008 award. Congratulations to them both!

During the two days we were lucky to have two entertaining and stimulating talks from senior STI members: Michael Brodie on “The End of the Computing Era: Hephaestus meets the Olympians” and Dieter Fensel on “Matrix revisited”.

You can see Michael Brodie’s presentation at the link below.

On the social side the first day incorporated a mini soccer tournament in which STI International managed to beat STI Innsbruck 5:2 (pictures below). We also had a traditional barbeque which was excellent.

We want to thank all participants who joined the Off-Site 2008 in Tenerife – the success of the event was down to their combined efforts and enthusiasm.

We are looking forward to meet you again next year in Crete with even more talks, Ph.D. presentations and possibilities for expert interactions and exchanges stimulating your current work and research.
