EC3 combines technological, economic, data analytic and juridical competencies in the field of electronic business in close cooperation with three universities of Vienna. The research areas are:

Move 2.0

The competencies of this research group spans from business models (analysis of enablers and success factors) and business process management to actual implementations of Internet-based business solutions (e.g. integration of businesses by metasearch techniques).

The group addresses research in virtual enterprises and online communities on a conceptual, analytical and implementation level.

Focus is set on a service-oriented view supported by semantic, semantic integration techniques, security and authorization, and Web 2.0 techniques. Actual projects are in metasearch for logistics, knowledge management and recommendation for a call center, digital signature practise in Europe, and community support for elderly people.

Customer and Business Analytics (CBX)

This department deals with the observation of consumers and particularly an improved exploitation of customer information offer considerable potentials for enhancing enterprise performance. The further development of market and consumer research in the context of electronic distribution channels has stimulated the evolution of applied statistical methodologies for the analysis of “electronic traces” of online consumers: from apparent user behaviour patterns can be derived allowing or supporting the redesign of customer relationships according to rational principles. Technological options, conditions, and restraints of data analysis of so-called “clickstreams”, especially in connection with other available business and transaction data build a focus of thematic research, augmented with applied statistics methodology for deriving valid models of user profiles, market and customer segmentation, and forecasts in general. Techniques of data warehousing and data mining provide the methodological foundation of all approaches towards empirical evaluation and optimisation of business models.

Information Spaces (iSpaces)

iSpaces is a research group at the EC3 - E-Commerce Competence Center dealing with the creation, exploration and understanding of, and interaction with large and potentially heterogeneous information spaces.

The organization of information constitutes a core competence of the iSpaces group. Using methods from the research areas of information retrieval, data mining, machine learning, user interface design and information visualization, data is put into a greater context to support serendipitous exploration as well as focussed search by non-standard interfaces.

These research areas are combined with a wide range of exciting application areas such as tourism, conference management, music organization & retrieval, document routing, or e-mail filtering.
