- ESWC PhD Symposium
ESWC is the leading European conference on theory, practice and application of Semantic Web Technologies, constantly attracting a large number of high quality submissions from both academia and industry. In addition to its plenary scientific sessions, the conference includes a Ph.D. Symposium to allow doctoral students to present their work and obtain guidance from leading scientists in the field. The ESWC 2008 Ph.D. Symposium will take place in Tenerife - Spain, on June 2, 2008. We invite doctoral students working on any aspect of the Semantic Web to submit an extended abstract describing the research problem they tackle in the context of their Ph.D. Each abstract will be thoroughly reviewed by two expert researchers in the field. In addition to the feedback received during the review process, students whose abstracts get accepted will have the opportunity to present their research agenda and interact with both their peers and experienced scientists during the symposium. All students are encouraged to submit an abstract, though preference will be given to students who are at an early stage of their Ph.D. (first or second year). Students who are submitting papers on specific portions of their work to the main conference are also invited to apply to the Ph.D. symposium. In that case, the short paper for the symposium must give an overview of the student’s dissertation, while the paper for the main conference should focus on a specific piece of this work.

- Sixth Summer School on Ontology Engineering and the Semantic Web (SSSW)
We are pleased to announce the sixth European Summer School on Ontological Engineering and the Semantic Web. This summer school, presented by leading researchers in the field, is the successor to the well-received schools held in 2003, as part of the activities of the OntoWeb Network Consortium, and in 2004-2007, as part of the activities of the KnowledgeWeb Network of Excellence. The school represents an opportunity for postgraduate students to equip themselves with the range of theoretical, practical, and collaboration skills necessary for full engagement with the challenges involved in developing Ontologies and Semantic Web applications. To ensure a high ratio between tutors and students the school will be limited to 50 participants. This year the school will be sponsored by a number of European projects including LUISA, NEON, SUPER and X-MEDIA and also by STI International.
- ICEC PhD Symposium
The ICEC Doctoral Consortium aims at bringing together doctoral students within the fields of e-commerce and e-business to open their work up to discussion in an international forum, and to obtain valuable feedback from their fellow scientists with respect to both topic-specific research issues, and research methodology. Students will be asked to submit an extended abstract (of about 5 pages), structured in accordance to a pre-defined template, whose focus is on the key methodological components required for a sound research narrative. Generally speaking, priority will be given to 1st/2nd year PhD students, because they are still in the process of defining the scope of their research. However, all PhD students are welcome and encouraged to apply. It will be co-located with the 10th International Conference on Electronic Commerce ICEC 2008 in Innsbruck, Austria, and is preliminarily scheduled for August, 19 2008.

- STI Offsite and PhD of the Year Award
The STI off-site is meant as a unique annual event to support the building of the international STI community and to strengthen established relationships between the members. It gives individual STI members from different countries and institutions the opportunity to get together in an inspiring environment and to shape the future development of STI and its operation. The off-site is organized as a two days event and covers a mixture of technical and networking activities, as well as invited talks on topics of general interest. The result is a generally improved understanding and acceptance of the overall mission and objectives of STI by the various members, a naturally evolving corporate identity of the network as well as established relationships and collaborations between individual STI members.
