The 4th European Semantic Technology Conference - ESTC2010 - will be organized in Vienna, Austria for the fourth time in a row. The aim of the conference is to bring together the world's leading thinkers, innovators, developers, engineers, and senior practitioners responsible for information technology to learn about how to integrate this advanced technology into their current systems. The ESTC2010 program will consist of several interesting workshops, keynotes by prominent international experts, round tables and the innovation seed camp. This newsletter contains a small teaser of what is to come.

1. PROGAM HIGHLIGHTS

aws ESTC Innovation Seed Camp will take place on the 2nd of December, 2010.
We will select the best applicants to demonstrate their business ideas to a panel of high level mentors and investors. Applicants should submit their business idea by the 18th of October.
Attractive cash prizes are awaiting the winners of the competition.
Selected Startups will receive two free passes to the conference for team members.

Peter Mika from Yahoo! Research will be talking about semantic technologies for search and social media in his keynote on the 3rd of December, 2010. Yahoo! attracts hundreds of millions of users every month through its innovative technology, engaging content, and practical services, making it one of the most trafficked Internet destinations and a world class online media company. In this talk, he will discuss and illustrate some of the ways in which Yahoo employs semantic technologies to improve the user experience for both Web search users and the visitors of its Internet sites. A VC Forum and Panels with interesting discussions will offer the unique possibility to get insight into prominent experts’ and investors’ views on topics such as Linked Open Data, Future Internet, and the challenges of creating a successful startup. ACTIVE Industry Showcase will take place on 2nd of December, 2010. Increasing a number of leading organisations from industry and research have joined forces in the ACTIVE project to develop technology which radically improves group and personal productivity. The result is a software prototype available for you to evaluate, either as a standalone system or as a portfolio from which you can select components to develop or enhance your IT systems. ACTIVE’s technology is based on a lightweight approach to using semantic technologies, and state-of-the-art machine intelligence techniques. The ACTIVE Industry Showcase will present three case studies on how ACTIVE technology is being used in different business sectors. For more information about the workshop, please visit:

Linked (Enterprise) Data Workshop organized by LOD2 project
Making insightful business decisions in a corporate environment relies mostly on the data managed in its internal information systems. The availability, reliability and quality of this data can have a significant impact in the efficiency of the internal enterprise processes and tools. Unfortunately, internally available enterprise data is usually not sufficient to meet the competitiveness challenges. In addition to this, a 360° vision of the business information is missing since most of the used tools do not capture the semantics of business oriented information. Integrating advanced semantic tools and mashing up additional data sources from the LOD cloud for example are straightforward to solve the previous problem. This presentation introduces the enterprise use case of LOD2 project where these two ideas will be implemented. For more information about the workshop, please visit:
