The Jožef Stefan Instituteis the leading Slovenian scientific research institute, covering a broad spectrum of basic and applied research. The staff of around 800 specialize in natural sciences, life sciences and engineering.

The main subjects concern production and control technologies, communication and computer technologies, knowledge technologies, biotechnologies, new materials, environmental technologies, nanotechnologies, and nuclear engineering. The JSI accumulates and disseminates knowledge and technologies to the benefit of society at large through the pursuit of research, development and education at the highest international level of excellence. The basic goals of the Institute are to provide expert scientific and applied output in the form of processes, products and consultancy, and to produce well-trained young scientists.

The mission of the Department of Knowledge Technologies is to develop advanced information technologies for the acquisition, storage, management and discovery of knowledge, especially data mining, machine learning, decision support and language technologies. Our aim is to contribute superior scientific results to the global treasury of knowledge and accelerate the application of these technologies in the development of e-science and the knowledge society.
