BT is one of the world’s leading providers of telecommunications solutions and services, operating in 170 countries.  BT’s portfolio of ICT services includes IP infrastructure, CRM, security, applications, managed mobility, hosting and outsourcing.  In the financial year ending March 2005, BT’s total revenue for networked IT services was around €6 Billion, more than 20% of a total revenue of around €27 Billion.

Within BT’s Research and Venturing Department, the Next Generation Web Research (NGWR) team researches future Web and intranet technologies.  In particular, this includes the application of semantic technologies and Web 2.0 technologies to areas such as business intelligence, knowledge management, information integration and service-oriented environments.  Recent collaborative research projects have included SEKT (coordinator), DIP, SOA4All and ACTIVE (coordinator).
