Know Center

The Know-Center is Austria's competence center for knowledge management and perceives itself as a point of origin of IT innovations at the interface between science and industry. Since its establishment in 2001, the Know-Center has been developing highly innovative solutions in knowledge management and knowledge technologies.
Excellence in research is the basis for the solutions developed by the Know-Center and for its competence. The research in the two areas Knowledge Services and Knowledge Relationship Discovery is focused on:
- Conceptual design and implementation of intelligent IT services for knowledge work and learning in organizations and communities (e.g. recommending knowledge resources in the work context)
- Conceptual design and implementation of methods for the discovery and content based analysis of knowledge in complex knowledge spaces (e.g. search based on the similarity of documents)
The scientific excellences of the area Knowledge Relationship Discovery include:
- Semantic enrichment of information sources using knowledge mining methods
- Semantic integration of heterogeneous information sources via ontologies and graph mining methods
- Retrieval in heterogeneous knowledge repositories and visualization of knowledge relationships
The scientific excellences of the area Knowledge Services include:
- Automatically Detecting a User's Multifaceted Context
- Improving Knowledge Worker Productivity
- Exploiting Emergent Knowledge Structures
To achieve its aim of delivering true innovation, the Know-Center cooperates with a wide range of partners. The network of partners who have signed an Agreement for Collaboration includes 5 internationally recognized research organizations and 19 international industry partners. In Austria, Graz University of Technology, JOANNEUM RESEARCH and Karl-Franzens-University form the scientific backbone of Know-Center. Through its continuous involvement on projects funded by the European Commission Know-Center maintains a tight network of companies and research institutions in Europe.
The Know-Center is funded within the Austrian COMET Program - Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies - under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth and by the State of Styria. COMET is managed by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG.

In its role as interface between research and industry the Know-Center has established the I-KNOW conference series – International Conference on Knowledge Management and Knowledge Technologies. With around 500 participants every year, I-KNOW has become the largest conference of its kind in Europe since its inception in 2001. I-KNOW provides a perfect framework for networking among international researchers and practitioners working in the fields of knowledge management and knowledge technologies.
